Rules

Black plays first; players alternate turns.
Place a stone on any empty intersection.
A stone (or connected group) with no empty adjacent intersections is captured and removed from the board.
Self-capture: you cannot place a stone that would immediately have no liberties, unless it captures an opponent's stone first.
Pass: a player may pass instead of placing a stone. Two consecutive passes end the game; the player closer to their capture target wins (equal ratios draw).
Ko: a move that would recreate the board position from just before your opponent's last move is not allowed. Play elsewhere first.

Win condition & handicap

Each player has their own capture target. A player wins when their captures reach or exceed their target.

Equal targets (e.g. both need 1): standard Capture Go, first capture wins.
Unequal targets (e.g. Black needs 1, White needs 5): a handicap game for mixed skill levels.
Higher targets (e.g. both need 10): a longer game rewarding sustained play.

Take the Stone is a two-player web implementation of Capture Go (also known as Atari Go), a beginner-friendly variant of the board game Go. Inspired by Go as Communication by Yasutoshi Yasuda.

Multiplayer

Each room has its own URL. Share the page URL with your opponent. Both players see moves in real time with no page reloads needed.

Board sizes

9×9 — small and fast, ideal for learning.
13×13 — medium board with more room for strategy.
19×19 — full-sized Go board.
